Arts council readies launch of Web site

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri plans to enter cyberspace soon, with a Web site set to launch in February or early March. Details will be forthcoming.

TRCC presents artist lecture, musician

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Cape Girardeau artist James Thurman will deliver a lecture at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center on the campus of Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 3. The center will display the artist's work through Feb. 24. Thurman's paintings and sculptures have been featured in Cape Girardeau shows with the Modest Living Artists, a group Thurman is a member of. At 7 a.m. Jan. 21 the Tinnin center will feature a concert by George Gershwin interpreter Jack Gibbons, a British pianist. Gibbons also performed at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri's annual Evening with the Arts in 2005. For more information on these events, call (573) 840-9170.

Woodpecker-watching opportunities available

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism is preparing for a birder blitz, posting online information to welcome visitors interested in catching a glimpse of the ivory-billed woodpecker. After keeping the woodpecker's discovery under wraps for a year, the state government is now welcoming visitors to the Big Woods area where the bird was discovered, but expects visitors to have realistic expectations about the low odds of seeing an ivory-bill. Martin Luther King Jr. events planned this week

Events in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will take place Sunday and Monday in Cape Girardeau. Events include the 16th annual Community Celebration at 5 p.m. Sunday at St. James AME Church; the 21st annual Memorial Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Osage Community Centre; the fifth annual Humanitarian Luncheon Monday at noon at the Osage; and the 10th annual Youth Gala at 4 p.m. Monday at Westfield West Park. Cheech Marin's 'Chicano' to display in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS -- Cheech Marin's traveling art exhibition "Chicano" will debut at the St. Louis Science Center on Jan. 27 and remain on display through May 14. "Chicano" is a dual exhibition of artistic works and interactive multimedia educational materials that highlight the history and current state of Mexican-American culture.
