Painting, drawing shows open at arts council
Exhibitions of paintings by Southeast professor Ronald Clayton and work by the Drawing Group, artists who meet every Wednesday at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, open today.
A reception for the artists will be held today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the arts council galleries at 119 Independence St.
Clayton's exhibit, titled "Chosen Series Paintings," consists of work inspired by his residency at the Modern Fine Arts Institute at Kunsan National University in South Korea.
Clayton is the chairman of the Department of Art at Southeast. His work was chosen for "Utah Art, Utah Artists: 150 Year Survey," an exhibition held in conjunction with the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
Grant Lund, a former Southeast art professor, started the Drawing Group in 1979. Muralist and sidewalk painter Craig Thomas has been leading the group for the past five years. Includes both beginnings and fine artists. The group meets from 7 to 9:30 p.m. each Wednesday. The $5 cost covers payment for the model.
The arts council is observing extended summer hours. Galleries are open from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
Narvel Felts at Whippoorwill Lake
MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Rockabilly legend Narvel Felts will perform Saturday at Whippoorwill Lake.
Felts, who grew up in Bernie, Mo., was one of the original Sun Records artists in the 1950s. His 1975 hit "Reconsider Me" was named single of the year.

'Joseph ...' arrives at Muny on Monday
ST. LOUIS -- "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" opens Monday and continues through Aug. 11 at The Muny.

St. Louis arts tour still available
Places remain for the Aug. 10 arts tour of St. Louis sponsored by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri.
The bus tour will include stops at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, the Dove Cafe, the St. Louis Artists' Guild and the St. Louis Art Museum. The museum is hosting an exhibit by Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi, father and daughter painters in Baroque Italy.

Cabaret star to perform in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS -- Cabaret star Andrea Marcovicci will perform Sept. 17-22 at the Grandel Theatre in St. Louis as part of the theater's Cabaret Series. Marcovicci, a film and cabaret star, will perform her new show, "One Life to Live: A Celebration of Gertrude Lawrence". The six-performance run will be presented Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m.
Single tickets for the four-show Grandel Theatre Series are on sale now.
One month after performing in St. Louis, Marcovicci will begin her 13th season at the Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel in New York.
Marcovicci's most recent CD, "Here, There, and Everywhere," in celebrates the songs of 1965 through 1985.

Opera singer to perform Saturday
SIKESTON, Mo. -- Opera singer Neal Boyd, a Southeast alumnus, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist church in Sikeston.
Boyd, a Sikeston native, has twice performed at Carnegie Hall. The proceeds from this concert will help support his operatic aspirations. He begins graduate studies in the fall at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Boyd has received a scholarship to cover the cost of his education, and proceeds from this concert are to help him cover his room and board expenses.
The concert will feature a mix of arias and pieces abstracted from various operas. Excerpts from "The Phantom of the Opera" also are on the program.
Boyd will be accompanied by Cape Girardeau resident Tim DePriest.
Rock 'n' roll festival in West Plains
WEST PLAINS, Mo. -- The West Plains Civic Center and Today's Classic Rock KSPQ 94 will present Rockfest 2002 Aug. 29. The 5 1/2-hour show will include LA Guns, Firehouse, Ratt, Warrant, and Dokken.

Lonestar, Sawyer Brown headline DuQuoin fair
DUQUOIN, Ill. -- Country bands Lonestar and Sawyer Brown will headline the DuQuoin State Fair. Lonestar, the Academy of Country Music's Vocal Group of the Year, led all entertainers with advance ticket sales of 935 tickets for its concert opening night on Aug. 24. Sawyer Brown will perform Aug. 31.
Other Grandstand acts include Trick Pony and Keith Urban on Aug. 25; a Southern Gospel Show featuring Chonda Pierce Aug. 26; Sara Evans on Aug. 27; and comedian Carrot Top on Aug. 28.
Local performers Sweet Kay Tee Jay, the Jungle Dogs and Wild Horses will entertain fairgoers Aug. 30, followed by the Sept. 1 True Legends of Pop concert featuring Bobby Vee, Tommy Roe, Johnny Preston, Brian Hyland and Shirley Alston Reeves, former lead singer of the Shirelles. Lifehouse will perform Sept. 2.

NPR star bringing show to Illinois
Fans of Michael Feldman's "Whad'ya Know?" comedy/quiz show program heard on public radio will have a chance Sept. 28 to attend the program broadcast live at the Sangamon Auditorium in Springfield, Ill.
WSIU Radio, Southern Illinois University's public radio station, has reserved seats for the show and has chartered a bus to the event. The cost is $125 per person and includes the ticket price, round-trip transportation and a breakfast snack. After the show, guests will go to White Oaks Mall in Springfield for lunch and shopping with a planned return to Southern Illinois by early evening.

Applications sought for arts grants
ST. LOUIS -- The Missouri Arts Council is accepting grant applications for the Artists in Residence program, which is designed to assist schools, colleges and communities in funding artist residencies lasting from a week to a year.
Eligible applicants must be based in Missouri, tax-exempt and a non-profit organization. Examples of eligible applicants are schools, school districts, public institutions, community-based organizations, or local government agencies. Requests for funding must be for activities taking place between Oct. 28, 2002 and June 30, 2002. The grant must be matched with cash and or in-kind services.

Former Cape resident to sing with orchestra
Former Cape Girardeau resident Dave Seabaugh and his 40-piece orchestra will perform Aug. 9-10, at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Ill.
Seabaugh, a vocalist, has performed around the Lake County, Ill., area for several years, and has become well-known in the area. This performance will find him surrounded with some of the best talent in the Chicago area, with three of the orchestra members having performed with Frank Sinatra. Six dancers will be performing on four of the songs.
Music in the show will include big band favorites like, "Mack the Knife," "It Had to Be You," "If My Friends Could See Me Now," "Luck Be a Lady," and an original Frank Sinatra arrangement of "Just The Way You Look Tonight."
Shows begin at 8 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $20 and are available online at www.daveseabaugh.com. All seats are reserved. Tickets must be picked up at the door. A photo ID will be required.
