A lot of money goes into making a musical.

When you're a junior high school teacher with no budgeted funds, you have to get the money somehow. So Cape Girardeau Central Junior High teacher Mike Dumey is hoping the popularity of last year's production of "Annie" will help bring in some bucks for this year's musical.

Dumey said the production alone costs $10,000, with $2,100 going to royalties last year for the "Annie" script. On top of those costs, Dumey is seeking an extra $10,000 this year for wireless mics, a necessity in a musical with dozens of youths.

"We can't use wired mics, you'd have kids tripping over cables," Dumey said. "I can now see the writing on the wall. We need our own wireless mics in case someday a church or individual can't loan them to us."

To raise money for the microphones, Dumey is calling on the help of CJHS alumna Judith Farris this Tuesday for a fund raiser at the Centenary United Methodist Church Family Life Center at 7 p.m.

Farris said she jumped at the chance to perform to promote Dumey's musical program, one that she says is valuable not only to the quality student performers but to the community.

The concert will feature student actors from last year's "Annie" singing tunes from the musical with Farris joining in. Farris will also sing other Broadway tunes.

"The entertainment will be equal to what they'll see on a professional stage," Dumey said.
