Scott County man arrested for alleged sexual abuse

BENTON, Mo. -- A Benton man was in the Scott County Jail on Thursday for alleged statutory sodomy, according to a Scott County Sheriff's Department news release. Gregory H. McElroy, 44, was charged with first-degree statutory sodomy for allegedly abusing an 11-year-old girl. According to the release, the sheriff's department learned of the abuse after being called to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, Mo., on Thursday morning and speaking with the alleged victim there. The abuse is alleged to have occurred Oct. 3. Bond was set at $100,000 cash-only.

Man arrested in Scott County for alleged sale of drugs near public housing

BENTON, Mo. -- A Benton man was arrested Friday on charges of selling prescription drugs near public housing, according to a Scott County Sheriff's Department news release. William D. Canter, 68, is charged with distribution of a controlled substance near public housing or other government-assisted housing and possession of marijuana. His bond is set at $50,000 cash. Canter allegedly sold prescription medication to an agent working with sheriff's department investigators during an undercover investigation. Canter was arrested at his residence.

Eighteen people and their dogs attended a two-day seminar this weekend near Cape Girardeau. Sponsored by Mike and Janel Pind, owners of Pindwood Kennel of Cape Girardeau, the Bill Hillmann Training Seminar for field trial and hunting retriever dogs attracted participants from Texas, Iowa, Mississippi, Indiana and Missouri. Most arrived Friday and will stay until Monday morning. Their dogs were nearly all black, yellow or chocolate Labrador retrievers.
