To the editor:Oct. 7 is the proper time to memorialize one of the most important discoveries in European and North American history. Over 900 years ago, Leif Erikson found North America by landing at Newfoundland. At the time, he was likely using a longship with a sail for propulsion. The spirit of this Viking adventurer can inspire those of us with Teutonic ancestry to strive to do great things that have never been done before.DUNCAN EDMISTER, ChairmanGerman-American VoiceSt. Louis
