A State Heritage: The Missouri State Fair
The Missouri State Fair originated 114 years ago when the state legislators signed it into existence April 19, 1899. The motivation was to provide a venue of fun and education for state agricultural and to benefit the state's economy. It continues to be called the state's "premier agricultural event".
The first actual fair-event took place 1901. Link here to the Missouri Digital Heritage website http://cdm.sos.mo.gov/cdm4/results.php?CISOOP1=any&CISOFIELD1=CISOSEARCHALL&CISO... to view some photos taken during past events.
Imagine the fun ahead, today through August 18, at the Missouri State Fair. You say "been there, done that". But you know deep down in your heart that there is always something new, fun or interesting, so I encourage you to hop in the car (or take Amtrak-see note below) and go make a day of it! It's well worth the effort. It'll make lasting memories for young and old especially the kids and grandkids. For all that fun and entertainment the single-entry price is reasonable too: Adults: $8, Children 6-12 years: $2 (5 and under are free), Seniors 60+: $6.
And if you don't want to drive to Sedalia for the fair, don't forget you can take Amtrak (Kids can ride for $5!)
Make it easier on your nerves and wallet by taking the family aboard the Amtrak Missouri River Runner with a special fare: just $5 for kids ages 2 to 15, one-way -- or $10 round trip. Purchase tickets now through Aug. 17 for travel from Aug. 8-18, 2013, to and from the State Fair in Sedalia. The discount offer must be booked at least a day in advance and is available for up to two children with each full-fare paying adult. Fares are subject to availability. Refer to discount code V156 when making reservations by phone at 1-800-USA-RAIL (872-7245) or online at Amtrak.com. eTicketing now is available.
The organization that sustains this historic event is the Missouri State Fair Foundation, which was "created to help preserve, improve, and perpetuate the rich heritage of the Missouri State Fair for future generations!" Its Mission Statement:
Established in 1998, the Missouri State Fair Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit 501(c)3 entity dedicated to preserving the rich heritage and traditions of the Missouri State Fair.
Since the inaugural Missouri State Fair in 1901, millions of people have visited the Fairgrounds during the annual State Fair and throughout the year to attend off-season events and activities. The Foundation serves as the vehicle to accept charitable contributions and cultivate fair experiences through preservation, education and improvement initiatives.
