Jerry Obermark

Jerome “Jerry” Lynn Obermark, 82, of Cape Girardeau passed away Thursday, April 25, 2024, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 15, 1942, in Washington, Missouri, to Herbert and Monnie Weaks Obermark. He and Patricia Layton were married Sept. 13, 1969, in Sikeston.

Jerry graduated from University of Missouri with a degree in journalism. He began his career as a reporter at the Southeast Missourian, followed by a stint at the Sikeston Standard, before joining the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tennessee, where he spent the majority of his career. Eventually becoming real estate editor, Jerry worked there until his retirement in 2003.

After retiring, he and his wife returned to Southeast Missouri, where he was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish. He spent many contented days as a familiar face in the hardware section of Menard’s. Jerry was a soft-spoken and humble man with a gentle soul who cherished his family, loved nature and animals and enjoyed watching westerns. His kindness and quiet strength will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia of Cape Girardeau; children, Jay (Renee) Obermark, and their children, Jasper and Penelope, all of Alexandria, Virginia, Jeanne (Eric) Floyd of Nashville, Tennessee, and Kathy Childress of Jackson; siblings, James (Mary) Obermark, Dennis Obermark and Donna (Tom) Schnaath, all of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 3, at Crain Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau, with Deacon Mark Kiblinger officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Inurnment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
