A MESSAGE TO VANDALS
(Editorial ~ 02/03/96)
Old Lorimier Cemetery is more than a final resting place. It is a slice of Cape Girardeau's history. Tombstones tell of men and women who shaped the development of both Cape Girardeau and the region. The destruction of 120 tombstones last November was nothing short of a vicious crime. It was one of the most severe incidents of vandalism to ever strike the cemetery. For the most part, vandalism cases had fallen off after city groups erected a chain-link security fence around the cemetery in 1992...

FIGHTING CRIME
(Editorial ~ 02/03/96)
It isn't hard to find deplorable examples of criminals taking over streets and neighborhoods across the country. But as crime has blossomed the past few decades, so has the public's intolerance for criminals. Law enforcement is sharpening the tools it needs to stem the tide of gangs and drug trafficking, mayhem and murder...

NO RESPITE FROM BITTER COLD UNTIL NEXT WEEK
(Local News ~ 02/03/96)
Bitterly cold temperatures were expected to continue throughout the weekend with lows hovering at or below zero. If it is any consolation, Dr. Al Robertson doesn't expect any record lows to be set. "The one you may want to watch for the next few days would be the minimum high temperature," said Robertson, a climatologist at Southeast Missouri State University. "I'd like to see a new maximum-high temperature record, but I don't think that's going to happen."...

TELECOM BILL COULD MEAN FUTURE IS NOW
(Local News ~ 02/03/96)
Hold onto your remotes. If President Clinton signs the telecommunications overhaul bill as expected, cable and telephone customers will be catapulted into the future. The changes may be a little intimidating at first -- Southwestern Bell offering cable, MCI as a local phone service carrier -- but local communications experts agree that consumers will come out winners if the industry is deregulated...

STRANGER THAN FICTION: PUT THE MAGAZINES AWAY AND GET REAL
(Column ~ 02/03/96)
When I read the magazine article, I couldn't believe it. Eight girls rented a two-story apartment while attending the University of Miami, in Ohio. Out of the eight, six of them had eating disorders. They'd sit around the Doritos bowl at frat parties, nibbling away. Then, one-by-one, they'd slip off to the bathroom and make themselves vomit...

SPEAKOUT
(Speak Out ~ 02/03/96)
WE ARE outraged at the harassment that our president and first lady are getting. We need to check these Republicans, make them take a lie detector test if nothing else, and see if they stole the papers or what went on up there. This is getting out of hand, and we are tired of it. I think they need to check into Alfonse D'Amato's skeletons in the closet. Have him come clean with some things. You know the old verse in the Bible says, "He that is without sin, let him cast the first stone."...
