To the editor: Anybody who supports renewal of the parks and soil and water conservation tax has either been deceived or is shortsighted. Who in his right mind would vote to continue funding for an organization that volunteered to steal your private property with Gestapo-style enforcement of the Natural Streams Act if it had passed? Who in his right mind would vote to continue the unethical and, in some cases, illegal land-grabbing activities of the Department of Natural Resources, made possible by the tax?. ...

Several local professionals, including Cape Girardeau's two hospital administrators, addressed Leadership Missouri participants about health care on Friday. The 40-member group made up of community leaders from throughout the state gathered at Drury Lodge for a two-day conference titled "Missouri's Vital Signs." The program was designed to inform participants about health care, from the Air Evac service to tick-borne disease...

Weather permitting, the National Weather Service office at Paducah, Ky., is broadcasting a live, question-answer program on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. The service is heard in Southeast Missouri on station WXL-47. A taped message on the station invited listeners to send in questions pertaining to weather. If the question is used on the program, the listener will be sent a free regional weather calendar...

On a muggy mid-August night in Detroit a 33-year-old single mother out for a night on the town found herself terrorized by a young, urban thug. Any organization that promotes literacy in the region can apply to the Area Wide United Way for grants given through the Youth Education Literacy and Learning program. According to Dorothy Klein, executive director of the local United Way chapter, grants are given to programs of all sizes, depending on the needs of those agencies. A new face will be at the helm of Cape Girardeau city government as of Oct. 16. Michael G. Miller of Ferguson, Mo., has been named Cape Girardeau's fifth city manager in the last 30 years. His credentials are impressive. Miller, 58, currently is a management consultant in St. Louis County and previously directed seven city governments in Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota. He opened his consulting business after serving as city manager of Ferguson from April 1989 to November 1993...

To the editor: I am glad to see the articles on organ donations that you have been running. As a recent recipient (July 21), I am glad that a perfect match was found, a kidney from a young man in Texas who died from a gunshot wound. I'm sorry he died and feel for his parents. I was called from St. Louis University in the middle of the night. I had only been on the kidney transplant list for two months. I am now home and doing good...

To the editor: I would like to share with you some concerns I have as a medical ethicist on a bill vetoed by the governor but subject to an override vote in Jefferson City on Sept. 13. I am concerned about Senate Bill 279, which assures that women faced with unwanted pregnancy are enabled to make informed decisions as to their legal options. ...
