It is time to stoke up the grill and dig out the tools. Today is the finale of the Cape Girardeau BBQ Fest, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce Agribusiness Committee.

Amateur teams will no doubt hit the grills early this morning at Arena Park. Judging begins at noon, with winners announced at 3:30 p.m.

This marks the third year for the barbecue contest. It is a lot of fun for both participants and onlookers. A special award will be given for showmanship. Teams can show off their creativity by use of skits, decorations, customs and crowd participation.

While the contest requires an amateur standing, many of the chefs take their art seriously. The sauces and preparation are secret concoctions. But passersby might pick up of few tips along the way.

The contest brings together a number of generous businesses and talented individuals. More than 20 teams are expected to participate. This BBQ Fest seems a good way to build community spirit.
