At 8-and-a-half years old, Roseman was bitten by a tick causing him to develop an allergy affecting his ability to eat the meat of mammals. The experience led the Jackson resident to conduct an experiment to see how different ticks, including the tick which caused his allergy, react or are attracted to carbon dioxide. The project earned him the fair's top overall honor enabling him to travel to Phoenix in May to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Although this was his first year participating the science fair, he said he plans to one day go into an engineering field. "I've always liked to solve problems," he said.

David Glastetter, a Knight of Columbus originally from Kelso and now Cape Girardeau, said the fish fries have been taking place at the location since the late 1980s. Donna Anderson, a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City, said friendship, camaraderie and fun are commonplace at their fish-fry events. "We seem to have some faithful customers and we seem to have those who come in to try it," Anderson said. "But we do have really, really good fish."
