Judi Brey of Cape Girardeau, Mo., is the Best in Show winner of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri's Regional Juried Art Exhibition. Her watercolor painting featuring vibrant blue glass vases and yellow daffodils is titled The Call of Spring. As the Best in Show winner, Brey will receive a $500 cash prize.
The Regional Juried Art exhibit will debut during a First Friday With the Arts gallery opening Friday, Nov. 6, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Arts Council Gallery, 32 N. Main in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
"This show is a great opportunity for local residents to see just how much artistic talent there is right here in our own community," said Melissa Miller, executive director of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri. "You don't have to travel to a big city to find talented artists and inspiring works. We've got 'em right here in the heartland."
This competition was open to artists, age 18 and over, who live within 175 miles of Cape Girardeau. They were encouraged to submit works interpreting the people, places and things that represent this diverse region. Categories included painting, 3-D, graphic and mixed media. A total of 70 works were selected for display in the 2009 exhibition. The Regional Exhibition is located in Gallery 100 and the Lorimier Gallery, the Chapman Gallery as always will feature new works by the Local Artists Co-Op.
Peter Nguyen, director of the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus served as the contest juror.
