A new program is lighting a fire for math in the hearts of Perryville High School students -- and gives them the chance to win a Kindle Fire or a Wii gaming console.

Math on Fire is a web-based supplemental before- and after-school program to boost mathematic achievement. Students can access Math on Fire at the high school library or anywhere they have access to a computer with an internet connection. It's offered through Apangea Learning and offers students instructional support and live assistance from certified math teachers.

"Students earn points for completing math problems," said PHS math instructor Mia Yamnitz. "They receive rewards at regular point intervals and prizes include pencils, markers, free snacks and soda, math homework passes and gift cards.

"Top prizes are a Kindle Fire and Nintendo Wii. A class pizza party will be awarded to the class with the highest average points per person, with every student having at least 2,000 points.

"You don't need to know all the math," Yamnitz said. "Apangea Learning has built in instructional support throughout the program. Students can look at lessons, use resource cards and even receive live tutoring.

"Parents can encourage students by asking them about the program, and checking on their points and rewards."

The PHS Library is open from 7 am until school starts and from 3-5 pm Monday-Friday. The Math on Fire program runs through April 20 and students can start at any time.

Students were given a username and password; their math teacher has it on file.
