"With the lowest number of veterans in Congress since WWII, two wars and an active threat, I know his boots on the ground experience will help guide our military policy. Despite my alignment with a different political party than Tommy, it is time we looked past party and put new blood into Congress. Our troops need more than support; they deserve a Green Beret in the room to help guide policy," said Lewis.

Sowers was an Airborne and Ranger-qualified Army officer for 11 years. He served as a Combat Engineer and Green Beret, and was awarded two Bronze Stars during two tours in Iraq. He left active duty service in August 2009, returning to his hometown of Rolla Missouri.

"It was an honor to fight for my country. Now it is time to fight for my home. I pledge that once elected I will take the first available trip to Afghanistan, not to be briefed by generals and their Powerpoint presentations, but to travel out to the remote outposts and spend nights and patrols with the Army and Marines. It is well past time to give our troops what they truly deserve--an experienced voice in Congress that knows firsthand how to fight in this conflict, one that can demand a clear objective or will bring the troops home," said Sowers.
