The healing benefits of art will be the focus of the 15th annual Art for the Health of It exhibition jointly sponsored by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and Southeast Missouri Hospital.
Entries must be delivered to the Arts Council's gallery by February 9, 2010 and an opening reception for the exhibit will be held February 21 at 2 p.m. at Southeast Missouri Hospital. Artwork will remain on display until April 29.
"The best works submitted will be hung in the surgical waiting room corridor bringing a soothing influence to a very stressful place," said Melissa Miller, executive director of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri. "This is a great opportunity for us to bring artwork out of our gallery to a place where it can be an inspiration to so many people who are going through tough situations."
This juried show is open to all area artists 18 years and older living within a 175 mile radius of Cape Girardeau. Entries must be original two-dimensional works in any medium, not previously exhibited at Southeast Missouri Hospital or created in a workshop or class. Maximum size is 48" x 48" including frame or stand. Maximum weight is 75 pounds. Complete guidelines may be found at www.CapeArts.org, under the event forms tab.
This year's exhibition juror is Emily Booth, a faculty member of Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Art. She is originally from Richmond, Virginia, and holds a BFA in painting and printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts and an MFA in Painting from University of Delaware. At Southeast, Booth also acts as exhibitions coordinator for the River Campus Art Gallery, actively recruiting regional artists and supporting student exhibition endeavors.
Cash awards will be given for the Best of Show piece and four Juror's Awards to be designated. Awards will be distributed at the exhibition opening reception Sunday, February 21.
