River Campus Southeast Explorer To participate in Red House Heritage Day and Children's Fall Frolic October 3

The "Southeast Explorer," presented by the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus will be featured at the October 3 Red House Interpretive Center Heritage Day and Children's Fall Frolic from 10a.m. -- 4p.m. The mobile museum will present, "Native Americans Pre-Contact," a free walk through exhibit which traces the evolution of Native American Societies from small bands of nomadic hunters and gatherers to complex chiefdoms. Displays highlight items used for hunting, fishing, foods, pottery, housing, beliefs, trading and more.

The public is invited to attend the Red House Heritage Day and Children's Fall Frolic which will offer more than thirty different booths featuring free activities and tours for children, a variety of items for sale, and displays and exhibits presented by individuals and groups from Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Advance, Kelso, New Madrid and Bertrand.

Some of the participants include: Red House docents who will have five free special booths for children's activities and the Red House will be open for free tours; Southeast Missouri State University mobile museum will be open for free tours; the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center will provide a trunk of furs and children's activities and an 1800's first person presentation by Liana Jenkins; the Trail of Tears State Park will provide a snake exhibit; Cape Girardeau Public Library Children's Services will have children's activities; Cape Girardeau Evening Lions will have fresh homemade bread for sale; the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will have a variety of items; Muellers Greenhouses of Bertrand will have a display of mums at the Red House; Cape Girardeau Grace United Methodist Church will hold a mini-bazaar with fresh baked goods, quilts, yarn items, Christmas lighted arrangements and more; Marble Hill resident Barbara Bailey will have her own handmade soaps for sale and she will demonstrate the art of spinning; Jackson resident Grant Gillard will have honey and honey products for sale; Mimi Higgins will demonstrate the art of spinning; the Rosemary Oxley Dulcimer Group will perform; Ellen Hahs Puppetry will give presentations; Jackson resident Kelly Hughes will display her Caterpillar Illustration Exhibit; Cape resident Paula Fetherston will display and sell her handmade jewelry, purses and miniature books; Advance resident Paul Corbin will bring a display of Indian artifacts; James and Deb Baughn Family will bring fresh picked apples and their antique tool display; the Cindy LeGrand 3rd Grade Class from St. Augustine School in Kelso will prepare for sale s'mores fixed over a fire pit -- profits to benefit expenses from the Relay For Life cookbook - "Cougars For A Cure"; Jackson resident Julie Bricknell will display and sell her handmade ceramics; New Madrid resident Sandy Hill will display and sell her own artwork and Christmas crafts; Cape Girardeau resident Jewell Eggley will display and sell her own handmade necklaces; and much, much more!

On Saturday from 10a.m.- 4p.m. Aquamsi Street will be closed to traffic and booths will line the street in front of the Red House. The Southeast Explorer will be parked on the South side of the Red House. The Red House will be decorated with corn stalks, hay bales, pumpkins, and mums from Muellers Greenhouses. the Rosemary Oxley Dulcimer Group will perform on the Red House porch.

Over two hundred years ago the original Red House was the home of the founder of Cape Girardeau -- Louis Lorimier. In 1803 the Red House hosted a visit from Captain Lewis, as he traveled with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In 2003 the Red House Interpretive Center was completed by an army of local volunteers for the national re-enactment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The permanent structure houses exhibits, information about the area in the 1800's, how it was developed and the people involved. The Red House proudly presents historical gardens and a 250' mural of the Mississippi!
