PCMS students create Character Quilts

Perry County Middle School's eighth grade class has created a paper character quilt highlighting the good character qualities each student strives to achieve. The quilt is on display in the eighth grade hallway at PCMS.

Teacher Kelly Hotop explained that each student chose character traits important to them. "Each eighth grader selected character traits that they would like to have or that they value in others," Hotop said. "They then incorporated those words, and an explanation of what those words mean to them, into a paper quilt block. You'll see words like honesty, integrity, courage, generosity, responsibility and determination. We then hung the artwork together and trimmed it to look like a quilt."

Hotop said that the character quilt is the culmination of the students' four years of character education at the middle school. Student Jennifer Lohmann said the quilt has special symbolism. "It shows that we are each different, but we're brought together as a school, like the different parts of a quilt."
