Thursday, Nov. 1, was a warm, sunny day in Cape Girardeau--perfect for the dedication of the new Louis Lorimier Library at Central Junior High School (CJHS). The ribbon cutting and dedication took place in front of the handsome brick and curved-glass structure, one of many construction projects and improvements made possible by the community's support of a bond issue approved in 2010.
Guests began arriving on the lawn of the library around 12:30 p.m. to the strains of the CJHS Orchestra. In attendance were school board members, supporters, staff, faculty, students, Chamber of Commerce representatives, featured speaker Dr. Frank Nickell, and two local authors: retired librarian Julia Jorgensen, who published a book chronicling Cape Public School District's first 100 Years; and Linda Nash, whose book examines the life and journals of Cape Girardeau's founder, Louis de Lorimier. Jorgensen and Nash conducted book signings in the library following the dedication. Refreshments ere provided by CJHS Business Partner Montgomery Bank.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jim Welker was master of ceremonies. Speakers included Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services Neil Glass, CJHS Librarian Libby Wilson, and CJHS Principal Carla Fee, who transferred the honor of cutting the ribbon to STUCO Co-Presidents Kathleen Kinder and Mackenzie Moore. The dedication was provided by School Board President Stacy Kinder.
Dr. Nickell, director of the Center for Regional History at Southeast Missouri State University, presented a memorable tribute to Louis Lorimier, credited with founding the City of Cape Girardeau. In 1820, Lorimier deeded property to Cape Girardeau for the establishment of a public school. A video of Dr. Nickell's remarks, as well as a video of the dedication ceremony, are available on the District's Facebook page: Facebook.com/CapeGirardeauPublicSchools
