Parents planning summer activities for children are reminded to add breakfast and lunch at Perry County School District 32 to their itineraries.

"The district operates a free food service program through grant funding from the Department of Health and Senior Services," said Assistant Superintendent Russell Leek. "One of the benefits of the program is that any school-aged child (ages 5-18) can receive a free breakfast or lunch on days that summer school is in session.

"The only requirement to receive the free meals is that the child must live within Perry County. They just come to the cafeteria during serving times and we'll serve them a nutritious meal at no cost."

Last year, the summer food service program served 11,485 student lunches and 4,352 breakfasts, Leek said.

"Thanks to this program, we're able offer free breakfast and lunch to any student attending our summer school programs, any student on campus for other activities, and community children ages 18 and under even if they are not enrolled in one of our schools," Leek explained. "The summer food service program also provides two healthy meals to many children who otherwise may not have access to them."

Summer school is in session June 2-27 at District 32 and meals are served in the Perryville Elementary School cafeteria. Food services director Angie Gotto and her staff arrive early each morning to begin preparing breakfast, which is served from 7:15-8 am. Lunch is served 11 am to 1 pm.
