Jackson Resident Writes Book About Trains

Melanie Lutes will present her series of Rolling Along children's books about trains this weekend at the Crafts, Gifts and Collectibles Show. The event will be held at Notre Dame Regional High School, November 20-21-22.

It all began reading stories to her son, who loved Thomas the Tank Engine books. Lutes explains, "I would go to the library and check out the Encyclopedia of Trains, so he could learn more. That was five years ago and I decided to write my own books."

The series of four books teaches facts about real trains. "They each have a specific purpose or teach a lesson." Rip teaches about the Pullman sleeping cars. Corley likes the Union Pacific line. Dao-ming will take you to Japan and introduce you to the Maglev transportation system. Finally, Bolt explains about the Amtrak Acela speed train that runs between Washington, DC and Boston, Mass.

"My first book, Rip the Night Engine, was published two years ago. Any little boy or girl, who is fascinated by trains, will enjoy these books."

Lutes, a resident of Jackson, MO., will have a book signing and offer gift sets this weekend at the 20th Annual 3-day event at Notre Dame. The Show is open on Friday evening 5pm to 9pm and Saturday 9am to 6pm. There is a $1 admission charge.

Free admission on FAMILY FUN DAY SUNDAY is 9am to 3pm. Bring the kids in for free face painting. Whirlwind Ranch from Lebanon, MO will demonstrate spinning alpaca fibers into yarn. Rumor has it that Santa will leave his Elves in charge of the Toy Shoppe and plans to stop by around 1pm to see who has been naughty or nice. Be sure to bring your camera!

You'll also have plenty of time to browse the wares of nearly 200 vendors and enjoy music from the new Christmas CD recorded by Notre Dame Senior, Amber Vandeven. Proceeds from the sale of her CD will be donated for a Notre Dame Scholarship.

Don't forget about the family priced concessions. All food is prepared and baked on site by some of the best cooks in Southeast Missouri. Take home some freshly baked cookies, brownies, pies or cakes.

Show proceeds are for the Notre Dame Performing and Visual Arts Program, Toy Box, Soldier Packages, Toys for Tots and Christmas for the Elderly.
