October is nationally recognized as Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Over 400,000 people are living with Down syndrome in the United States, and many others' lives are touched by this relatively common genetic disorder. Yet, many myths, misunderstandings, and much misinformation still exist, which may contribute to unfortunate stereotyping. The reality is that, thanks to medical advances, early intervention, classroom inclusion, increased opportunities, and loving support of families and communities, individuals with Down syndrome can and do live healthy, happy, and fulfilling lives. Many graduate from high school and some attend college. Many are employed, and perform their jobs in an exemplary way. Gifted artists, actors, musicians, and athletes are among those who also happen to have Down syndrome.
The Heartland Down Syndrome Association will celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month with a Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk on Saturday October 9 at 10 a.m. at Cape County Park North. The event will kick off with patriotic music, followed by a one-mile walk around this beautiful park, then music and dancing, a bounce house, face-painting, and a free picnic lunch. A poster contest will offer prizes for posters reflecting positive images and messages regarding Down sydnrome awareness. All individuals, families, and teams attending are invited to submit a poster. HDSA invites everyone who has Down syndrome, knows someone with Down syndrome, or simply wants to show support, to celebrate with us at this year's walk. We do request pre-registration if at all possible. For questions or to register, please call 573-334-5685 or email heartlanddsa@msn.com
