Why pay to dispose of your electronics when you can have them recycled for free? Virtually anything with a cord or battery can be recycled during the Free Electronics Recycling Event on June 9 at the Cape Girardeau Public Works Department.
Free Electronics Recycling Event
Saturday, June 9, 2012
8:00 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Cape Girardeau Public Works Building
2007 Southern Expressway
Cape Girardeau, MO 63703
Televisions are limited to one per vehicle for the free event. Additional TVs will be $15 to recycle. All lawn and garden items must have the oil and gas removed, if applicable. No smoke detectors, glass lamps, light bulbs or fluorescent tubes will be accepted.
The City's first and most recent, free electronics recycling event was held in October 2009 at Arena Park. Almost 500 residents participated, diverting 140,000 pounds of electronic waste from landfills.
Can't make it to the free event on June 9? Residents and businesses can drop off electronics for recycling Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Public Works recycling facility. A Midwest Recycling Center (MRC) staff member will help customers unload. Most items are recycled free, but there is a $15 charge to recycle tube televisions under 27" and a $35 fee to recycle console and tube TVs over 27". Projection TVs and other big screens that are not LCD or Plasma are $35. MRC also offers computer hard drive destruction for a fee of $5. Call MRC at 573-335-2020 for more information.
