CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Pfc. D'Adrian Farr of Cape Girardeau has joined the Missouri National Guard's 1140th Engineer Battalion's Forward Support Company, after successfully completing basic training and advanced individual training.
Farr, 19, completed basic training last year at Fort Jackson, S.C., and then advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, where he trained to be a motor transportation operator. Miller is serving with the 1140th's Forward Support Company, which is based at the armory in Cape Girardeau.
"I was just looking for something better to do with my life," Farr said. "I was looking for a way to pay for college and I know the military discipline is already helping me to become a better person."
Farr was recruited by Staff Sgt. Zachary Petty of the Missouri National Guard's Sikeston recruiting office. Farr intends to enroll at Southeast Missouri State Missouri University and study criminal justice. He graduated from New Madrid County Central High School in 2008.
Farr said he is looking forward to contributing to his new unit and working with Staff Sgt. Steven Bell in the recruiting office in Cape Girardeau, where he intends to tell his friends and other potential recruits about the benefits of the Guard.
"I want to have a big impact on the unit I'm in and do whatever it takes to become a better Soldier," he said. "Just knowing I'm an American Soldier helps me know that I've accomplished something."
Farr is supported in his decision to join the Guard by his mother, Terunda Farr of New Madrid.
