CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Pvt. Wesley Derrick, of Jackson, recently completed his military training to become a combat engineer for Missouri National Guard's Headquarters Company, 1140th Engineer Battalion in Cape Girardeau.
"I joined the Guard because I wanted to serve my country and provide for my family," Derrick said. "I know I can find a career in the Guard and get a good experience."
He graduated from basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., Dec. 17, 2010.
Prior to training, Derrick served with Company E of the Recruit Sustainment program in Cape Girardeau. Through the program, he learned basic Army skills and values and became more familiar with his role as a Soldier in the Missouri Army National Guard.
Staff Sgt. Steven Bell, recruiter at the Cape Girardeau armory, said Derrick will be a good asset to his new unit.
"He's dedicated to be a good Soldier and being a responsible parent," said Bell. "He's got a lot of determination to complete any task or training. He'll be a great engineer."
Derrick will begin serving with his new unit in February 2011.
Derrick is the son of Jeff and Michele Derrick, of Jackson. He has a daughter Raylee, 2. He is a graduate of Jackson High School.
