Four new members of the Cape Central High School Athletic Hall of Fame have been selected and will be inducted during ceremonies Friday, September 20, 2013, at 5 P.M. in the Cape Central Commons and then introduced at half-time during the football game that evening at Tiger Stadium. Three of the inductees are former CHS athletes, and one is a former CHS coach. Pictured from the left are Travis Clark, Class of '91; Tatum Kitchen, Class of 98; Mike Schuettte, Class of 1966; and Annette Slattery, former Head Women's Tennis Coach.
Travis Clark lettered in football, basketball and track. He received the Lou Muegge Award-- the highest athletic honor at CHS-- and was his football team's captain. In high school, Travis was designated "a player to watch" by USA Today newspaper. Travis was the Missouri State Champion in high jump three consecutive years, culminating in a track scholarship to Stanford University, where he was Pac 10 Decathlon Champion his junior year. Travis graduated from Stanford in 1995 and went on to graduate from Vanderbilt University Medical School with honors.
Tatum Kitchen was an outstanding all-around athlete who lettered in football, basketball and baseball. His many honors include the Lou Muegge Award and his selection to play in the Missouri All-Star Football Game. In '97, Tatum was rated by First Down Recruiting magazine as the #2 high school linebacker in Missouri. Tatum is presently a CGPS teacher and serves as head baseball coach and assistant football coach at CHS.
Mike Schuette lettered in football, basketball and baseball and was selected as an All-Conference baseball player. He was the shortstop on his baseball team, quarterback on his football team and forward on his basketball team. Mike served in the Army during the Vietnam conflict in front-line combat. Always a strong supporter of CHS and of Southeast Missouri State University athletics, Mike passed away last year at the age of 63.
While coaching tennis at CHS, Coach Slattery accumulated 303 wins with only 37 losses. Her women's teams won 19 district titles and included 11 undefeated regular seasons. Annette earned the distinction of taking her players to the Missouri State Tournament every year she coached and also led players to compete in the Missouri State Final Four. Broadly recognized as a master teacher of health and physical education, Annette's accomplishments as Head Women's Coach stand unchallenged in the history of tennis at CHS. Annette currently teaches physical education at Southeast Missouri State University.
