Central Municipal Pool renovations are now complete, and the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on Aug. 22, at 11:30 a.m.

"The improvements that we have made to the Central Municipal Pool will positively impact our daily users, fitness users, program participants, and our serious competitors," said Recreation Division Manager Penny Williams.

Exterior renovations include pool and pool deck painting and resurfacing, replacing diving boards and fencing, deck furnishing, replacing the fabric "bubble" covering and air handling unit, and painting and repair of the wading pool.

Interior renovations include the addition of a small meeting room/classroom, new light fixtures, admission area upgrades, and dressing rooms with a new family changing area.

Project funding was possible through the Parks and Recreation Storm Water Initiative passed by voters in 2008.

Mayor Harry Rediger, City Manager Scott Meyer, Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Chairman Danny Essner, Parks and Recreation Director Julia Thompson, and Williams presented information about the facility renovations during the ceremony.

"Making these changes has overwhelmingly enhanced the quality of this facility. We are very excited about the improvements that have been made to this aquatics facility," said Williams.

Cape Girardeau's Central Municipal Pool has the only Olympic-sized pool between St. Louis and Memphis, and is used by many local clubs and school swimming teams. Year-round facility use is made possible by the fabric covering installed over the pool during winter months, commonly referred to as the "bubble".
