October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time for all Americans to learn about domestic violence, reflect on the costs of the crime to our society, an promote laws, policies and programs to improve services to victims, hold offenders accountable an prevent domestic violence in our communities. Last year 8,324 Missouri women and children were unable to find shelter at a domestic violence program due to lack of resources according to the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence.
"Behind these numbers are victims-women and children in our communities-who often need help and protection that hey never receive," Linda Garner, Executive Director of the Safe House for Women, said. "It is vital that we take the time to raise awareness of domestic violence and the need for additional resources to ensure help is available to all who need it."
Cape Girardeau County kicked off Domestic Violence Awareness Month at the Domestic Violence Community Response Task Force Meeting where Cape Girardeau Mayor, Jay Knutson read the proclamation. Special events are planned during the month of October for volunteers, donors and clients.
Community members are encouraged to join in this month's activities and get involved in helping victims of domestic violence.
