A total of ten girls from two separate troops completed the requirements to earn their Girl Scout Bronze Award. This is the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can earn. It requires her to learn the leadership and planning skills necessary to follow through on a project that makes a positive impact on her community. Working towards this award demonstrates her commitment to helping others, improving her community and the world, and becoming the best she can be. Girls may work on the award individually or in a group. All of the requirements for the Bronze Award must be met before leaving Junior Girl Scouts.
Kim Price, Troop Leader and Kim Kolda, Assistant Troop Leader supported their 5th Grade girls with the requirements. These girls chose their Bronze Project to plan, organize, and implement a lock-in at St. Vincent dePaul Grade School. They incorporated a food drive within the Project by asking each girl to donate a canned good item as their admission fee. A total of 70 items were collected and given to Catherine's Cupboard a local food pantry in Cape Girardeau. The girls entertained all Girl Scouts at this school with a "Web Surfing" theme. Pairs of Junior Girls had different "channels" with individual activities at each "channel" or room. Themes ranged from "Are You Smarter Than A Junior Girl Scout" to "Tai Kwon Do" skills. After their entertainment, older Girl Scouts were invited to stay overnight at the lock-in. The Bronze Award Pin was presented to: Destiny Bruenderman, Kathleen Harold, Julia Kohlfeld, Taylor Kohlfeld, Sylvia Kolda, Annie Martin, Maddie McClintock, and Claudia Price.
Additionally, two girls from a different troop achieved their Girl Scout Bronze Award. Karen Hann is the troop leader for these girls. Savannah Lively and Hannah Trautman chose their Bronze Project to help prevent and ultimately stop water pollution and dumping. These girls worked with the Cape Girardeau Water Department and painted blue stencils along Abbey Street and Horseshoe Ridge. The purpose of their Project was to bring awareness to the community that any dumping and contamination with chemicals and trash will affect a water source in Cape Girardeau and lead to global contamination to larger water sources.
Finally, there were four girls led by Linda Mittrucker to achieve their Girl Scout Silver Award. The Silver Award represents a girl's accomplishments in Girl Scouting and her community as she grows and works to improve her life and the lives of others. The first four requirements of the Girl Scout Silver Award help girls build skills, explore careers, gain leadership skills, and make a commitment to self-improvement. The Girl Scout Silver Award Project can be undertaken when the first four requirements are completed. It can be done as an individual or with a group. These girls chose their Silver project as a troop to clean and remodel a chapel located inside the convent on the St. Vincent dePaul School campus. The former convent is used as a meeting place for the church Youth Group. The chapel itself has not been used for over 10 years and was in need of major clean-up and repair. The girls purchased all of the supplies and completed the work themselves from refinishing floors, minor repairs, cleaning, etc. When the Project was completed, they planned a dedication ceremony and then presented the chapel to the church leaders. These girls are Elizabeth Kiblinger, Sarah McCrate, Sarah Mittrucker, and Jessica Pfau.
Congratulations to all of these Girl Scouts! Thanks and appreciation is also extended to the Troop Leaders, parents, families, and the Cape Girardeau community for supporting these girls and allowing them to make a difference in the lives of others.
