On October 10, 2009, the Heartland Down Syndrome Association will host Southeast Missouri's first-ever Buddy Walk. The local walk is being sponsored by Boy Scout Matt Jedlinski, Troop 16, who is organizing and coordinating the event as his Eagle Project. Many Eagle projects focus on actual building with wood and cement, but Jedlinski's plans are to build what he hopes to become an annual event for the newly formed Heartland DS Association.

The walk is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Cape County Park North, Pavilion 8, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and will be approximately one mile in length. Robyn Hosp will be there to kick off the event by singing "God Bless America", and several fun activities for the kids will follow the walk. Sound Xtreme of Paragould, Arkansas will supply music and DJ services. Boy Scout Troop 16 and the local military honor guard will also participate. All are invited to walk and join in the fun.

Buddy Walks were created in 1995 to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. This year, at least 250,000 people are expected to participate in 280 Buddy Walk events. The Heartland Down Syndrome Association was established in 2006 to provide support, advocacy, and activities for families of children with Down syndrome in this area.

Pre-registration is appreciated. Please email Matt Jedlinski at heartlandbuddywalk@yahoo.com for questions or to register. Come help us celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month and spend a fun day with family and friends as we generate support for those with Down syndrome.
