FactCheck.org, a non-partisan truth-checker in political campaigns, has blown the whistle on Robin Carnahan for multiple false statements about Gulf oil spill issues.
The group's report, issued Friday, is devastating to the credibility of liberal Democrat Robin Carnahan. The group made a detailed analysis of Carnahan attack videos and an e-mail sent to her supporters which distorted federal law and the facts.
Instead of offering solutions to address the Gulf oil spill disaster, Carnahan took the low road of false attacks, by misrepresenting the facts and law in a series of attack web videos, e-mails and news releases riddled with falsehoods and distortion.
"This pathological lack of truthfulness about the oil spill requires Robin Carnahan to apologize immediately, withdraw this crate of garbage and distortion, and discipline those responsible for this blatent misconduct," said Andy Blunt, campaign manager for Roy Blunt's U.S. Senate campaign.
"We call on Carnahan to personally address the media today about her lack of truthfulness, and to immediately take down all web videos, Internet posts, news releases and any other materials that repeat these phony attacks."
The FactCheck.org report, titled "Phony 'Big Oil Bailout' Claims," found serial falsehoods in Robin Carnahan's campaign web video statements and accusations. Findings by FactCheck.org included:
"We find the charges to be false."
"...the Democratic candidate misstates and distorts Blunt's position..."
"...Carnahan leaps to the false conclusion"
"...mislabeling that a 'bailout.'"
"...without any evidence..."
"...misleading..."
"Carnahan's video also exaggerates..."
"...the Carnahan video misrepresents Blunt's position on liability..."
"...it makes this unfounded charge..."
"The Carnahan campaign falsely says..."
"...flawed conclusion..."
"...no proof..."
"...just part of a misleading narrative built on out-of-context quotations..."
"...a flawed understanding..."
"...an inaccurate use of the word 'bailout.'"
The FactCheck.org report followed discovery by the Blunt campaign that Carnahan falsified her resume to remove a key section of her biography, to hide her work in Washington, D.C. as a banking executive at a government bank.
Earlier, Carnahan's liberal allies issued a false complaint against Roy Blunt about a cap and trade mail piece which outlined Blunt's opposition to the National Energy Tax. This phony complaint was quickly dismissed by a bipartisan committee. Since April 2009, environmental extremists and other liberal groups have aired false TV ads in Missouri attacking Roy Blunt for opposing the energy tax.
Roy Blunt has addressed the oil spill disaster as a problem-solver, including the Oil Spill Response and Assistance Act, a proposal that goes much further than the liberal bill rubberstamped by Carnahan. Instead of looking to the public interest, Carnahan sought to politicize the ongoing oil spill, in the statements now shredded by FactCheck.org.
The Blunt bill doubles the current cap or caps liability at four quarters of profits, whichever is higher. Under Roy Blunt's plan, BP would be on the hook for $20 billion, about double the amount in the Carnahan-rubberstamped bill.
The Roy Blunt bill also includes preventive measures and requires investment in new technologies, which is critical in the aftermath of a disaster like this.
The Blunt legislation would establish much greater reserve requirements for oil containment barriers known as "booms," to withstand up to six-foot waves, and would target work on technology capable of capping leaks.
The bill also would require a detailed report by September 1 from all agencies involved in the response in the Gulf of Mexico, to evaluate the effectiveness of their practices and procedures.
