Recently opening day was up for election as a national holiday and although it didn't reach this lofty status for a large portion of Americans, it is and always will be for me. Let me tell you why the first game of the baseball season is so special. For a long time baseball was considered the greatest sport in the world and although some would argue football is better, there's still something about the excitement of a ball being thrown 6 inches away from a batter at 92 mph. The drama of having to give that man his chance is the pomp and circumstance of opening day and it's more than just a game, it's a celebration of the beginning of a season. It breathes fresh life into all 30 MLB franchises. Yes, even the Cubs and Astros believe they have a chance on this day. More than anything, opening day is the time of year where the crack of a bat can make you feel alive like no other thing can, truth in its clearest form. There are only three constants in this world, death, taxes, and opening day. It's time to play ball.
