No good without God
(Column ~ 10/02/21)
Did you hear the one about the atheist who was appointed head chaplain? You may be waiting for the punchline, but this is not a joke. Can you imagine someone who is against believing in God leading groups that practice faith in God? How about a pro-life/anti-abortion person heading Planned Parenthood? Is that any more outrageous than an atheist leading a religious organization?...

County poor farm's roots
(Column ~ 10/02/21)
Sometimes, finding a ledger at the Cape Girardeau County Archive Center leads to more questions than answers. When a researcher asked me about the ledger for the Cape County Poor Farm, or Home for the Friendless, that held true. I hadn't known much about the poor farm before, just that as many counties in the 1900s did, Cape County had one. It was more or less where Cape County Park is now, for about 70 years, until 1956. After a series of other uses, the park was established in the 1970s...

Just a taste
(Column ~ 10/02/21)
I start all my pepper seeds in my little work building and, when growing well, they go to the greenhouse. When they are big enough, we then transplant them into the hill garden. When I start the peppers, I write on a small piece of plastic indicating what pepper variety it is. These consist of a piece of plastic window blind about 4 to 5 inches long, and I write on them with a permanent marker. So when we plant them in the hill garden, we put the marker by them, indicating the variety...

Don't handle this one
(Column ~ 10/02/21)
This is a yellow-bellied water snake. Southern Missouri swamplands are a good place to find this snake. It lives on small fish, frogs and crawdads. If you happen upon a yellow-bellied water snake, be sure it is what you think it is. It can look quite like a cottonmouth. The cottonmouth is venomous. The yellow-belly is non-venomous and considered harmless, although if cornered and aggravated it will bite you...

Cronyism's critics continue to miss the point
(Column ~ 10/02/21)
How to best ensure substantial long-run economic growth should be a question on everyone's mind. Its benefits can't be overstated, and it's undeniable that the lack of growth is a root contributor to many seemingly disconnected economic and social problems. That's the central theme of a recent podcast discussion between The New York Times' Ezra Klein and George Mason University economist Tyler Cowen...

The Census Bureau has just issued its latest annual report, "Income and Poverty in the United States: 2020," and American Enterprise Institute economist and blogger Mark Perry has extracted and summarized its highlights, as he does every year.
