LETTERS: LOTS OF LYING SEEMS TO BE GOING ON
(Letter to the Editor ~ 09/25/98)
To the editor: It seems as if President Clinton hasn't been the only one who has lied. I watched the entire despicable proceedings on TV, and nowhere did he "blow up" and leave the proceedings as the Republicans led the entire nation to believe. Also, another major player, Linda Tripp, seems to have lied...

SPEAKOUT
(Speak Out ~ 09/25/98)
Prevent pregnancy, prevent abortion THE ANSWER to the abortion issue is very simple. If prevention of an unwanted pregnancy or abstinence were used, there would be no abortion issue. It's as simple as that. People aren't taking responsibility, so it creates unwanted pregnancies. They have no example in our leadership, either, for taking responsibility. This lack creates havoc in our nation...

CARNAHAN'S FISCAL POLICIES QUESTIONED
(Editorial ~ 09/25/98)
Missouri is in the national spotlight, and it is embarrassing what the glare is revealing. It should come as no surprise to the state's taxpayers that they are giving more and more of their hard-earned dollars to Jefferson City. As a matter of fact, a colorful map published by the Tax Foundation in Washington shows a bright-red spot in the center of the nation. ...

LETTERS: THAT'S NOT EXACLTY WHAT BIBLE SAYS
(Letter to the Editor ~ 09/25/98)
To the editor: I should like to see the copy of the Bible which contains the exact lines for sparing the rod and spoiling the child. I don't find it exactly that way in any of the seven Bibles in three languages that I examined. Proverbs 13:24 in the King James version reads, "He that spareth his rod hateth his son." Martin Luther in about 1540 translated it as "Wer seinen Rute (rod) schonet (does not use), der hasset (hates) seinen Sohn; were aber Lieb hat, der zuchtiget (punishes) ihn bald." If you go for Spanish, try "El que detiene el castigo, a su hio aborrece.". ...

LETTERS: VOTE TO RECLAIM MISSOURI'S RIVERWAYS
(Letter to the Editor ~ 09/25/98)
To the editor: Show me the river. They promised river cruises, a taste of history, romance, intrigue and family entertainment. Instead, we have a smoky casino that floats in a moat, a casino filled with local retirees willing to spend their children's inheritance as well as their own savings. Come on, Missouri, see the truth...

LETTERS: A CALL FOR DEBATES IN THE 8TH DISTRICT
(Letter to the Editor ~ 09/25/98)
To the editor: Over 200 years ago, after the Revolutionary War cut our status as colonies of Great Britain, our nation was forged from the class series of debates on the Constitution, collected in the Federalist and Anti-Federalist debates. No one can dispute that the free and sharp exchange of views helped forge that dynamic document...

MEDICAL SURFARI: IS IT THE BLUES OR DEPRESSION?
(Column ~ 09/25/98)
Life presents each of us with a spectrum of experiences for which we may develop an emotional response. If you are experiencing emotions at the low end of this spectrum, this may be normal depending upon the recent stressful events in your life. ...

RIVER CITY JOURNAL: THIS COLUMN IS ABOUT SOMETHING, BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT
(Column ~ 09/25/98)
They say memory loss is part of old age. How do you explain not remembering anything since the eighth grade? There are all kinds of formulas floating around. I know. I memorized a lot of them when I was in grade school. That was back in the Dark Ages when students were expected to know the answer to nine times eight, the capital of New Mexico (Alaska and Hawaii weren't states yet, so our job was 4 percent easier than it is today) and how to figure percentages...

CENTRAL VISITS OAKVILLE FOR BIG CAT FIGHT
(High School Sports ~ 09/25/98)
When the Cape Central Tigers visit south St. Louis County tonight, they will not find the usual Oakville football team. Oakville is off to a 2-1 start in 1998, with wins over University City (27-6) and Seckman (38-12). Probably most impressive was the fact that the Tigers went to double overtime before losing to Parkway North, a team which also has beaten defending Class 5A state runner-up Parkway Central this season...
