Fred W. Naeter Dies; Founded Missourian With Two Brothers
Fred W. Naeter, last of the three brothers who established The Missourian almost 61 years ago, died of arteriosclerosis at 4:30 a.m. today at thee Deal Nursing Home in Jackson where he had resided since February.
A friend of the great and the near great over his 91 years, Mr. Naeter had continued active in the affairs of The Missourian until a year ago when he stepped down from management.
His career covered a period from the time the West was won through the conquest of space. He saw newspaper publishing advance from handset type -- at which he was adept -- to the use of computers and other modeern scientific methods.
His busy life, which included public service under both Democratic and Republican governors, was intertwined with the growth and progress of Cape Girardeau and Missouri...

More than 1,000 at mural dedication
The mural which Jake Wells referred to as "some thoughts on a wall" was formally dedicated Sunday afternoon at Kent Library, officially opening SEMO State University's observance of its centennial year.
Rush H. Limbaugh, a SEMO alumnus and recipient of the university's Alumni Merit Award, was keynote speaker for the dedication, which attracted more than 1,000 people.
Mr. Wells, a member of the SEMO art faculty, captured in his mural the history and personality of Southeast Missouri on the massive 28 by 30 foot mural.

Three found murdered

A mother, grandmother and 11-month-old boy were fatally shot Sunday in the second triple homicide in Cape Girardeau in just over a month.
Charged in the deaths is Andrew Lyons of 1019 S. Sprigg St., the former boyfriend of one of the women and the infant's father. Police arrested Lyons about five hours after the shooting.
Dead are Evelyn Sparks, 49, her 22-year-old daughter Bridgette Harris, and Dontay Harris -- the 11-month-old son of Harris and Lyons. Two other children hid under a bed in the house during the shootings and later escaped unharmed.
Friends of the victims said Lyons was distraught over the breakup of his relationship with Harris, and that he had threatened violence before.
Police said Harris reported last week that Lyons threatened her with a gun. When he was brought in for questioning, Lyons denied the charge and was released...
