A RED DEVIL RUNS TO JACKSON
Old Fashion Stage Coaches Will Soon be Replaced By Automobiles.
Wm. Gockel of Jackson, who runs the stage coach between that place and Cape Girardeau, arrived here on the Chester late last evening with an automobile -- a genuine "red devil" -- and today it is making trips instead of his coach.
While at the World's Fair he saw the opportunity to buy a $2,500 machine cheap and he decided to replace the old-fashion stage coach with a high-speed automobile.
The auto will carry four passengers and the chaffeur, and the trip can be made in about 30 minutes. On account of the great speed a number of trips will be made in a day, and from this time on you can get from one town to another at most any time.
Fire Threatens Cape Landmark On Broadway; Nipped at Start
A major Cape Girardeau landmark, the 87-year-old Opera House at Broadway and Lorimier street, was threatened for a time early today by a fire that did minor damage to the Petit N'Orleans, French style restaurant that operates on the ground floor.
Fire Chief Carl Lewis said given another five minutes' headway, the fire could have caused a major downtown conflagration. The blaze was discovered by a passerby, whose name was not learned, when he heard the explosion of magnums of champagne around which the fire had started.
Richard Barnhouse, owner of the restaurant, and Chief Lewis theorized that a spark from a cigaret or cigar may have fallen into the excelsior around a display of a new shipment of wine in the dining room before the restaurant closed around 1:30 a.m. today.

NEW MADRID -- For the past several months, tiny New Madrid has been the focus of growing national and international attention. On Sunday, the media circus came to town.
The attention was touched off by projection of climatologist Iben Browning that a major earthquake could occur along the geological fault named after the town.
Residents of New Madrid and others who live along the fault will learn today if Dr. Browning's projection comes to pass.
Browning's projection caught the attention of the news media, and the four major networks, CBS, ABC, NBC and CNN were preparing to transmit live coverage Sunday and Monday via satellite.
Numerous other television, radio and newspaper reporters were also in town.
On Sunday, camera crews swarmed through the business district and the river levee area, interviewing local residents, visitors, tourists and each other.
