DAILY REPUBLICAN MOVES TO NEW SITE

Tomorrow The Daily Republican will begin moving into its new location at the corner of Broadway and Spanish Street, and by Tuesday morning the most modern newspaper office in Southeast Missouri will be in complete working order.

The building hs been remodeled so that a special business office, a separate composing room and a separate press room will meet the requirements of a steadily increasing business.

The task of moving presses, engine and other printing machinery will begin Saturday evening, and although an expert pressman will come from St. Louis to supervise the work, it will be impossible for us to issue a paper Monday...

Cape Girardeau's $13 million multipurpose building will apparently be built on the SEMO State University campus.

After listening for more than two hours to comments from the standing-room-only crowd at city hall Wednesday night, the city council voted unanimously to locate the controversial structure on the old university farm property at New Madrid and Sprigg streets.

But in approving the 30-acre site, the council also left open the possibility that the site issue could be reconsidered at a later date. The council authorized the project architect to evaluate four locations -- Interstate 55 and Route K, the Westborough Mall property, and the site at Highway 61 and I-55...

Massive power outage caused by floodwaters

The floodwaters of the Mississippi penetrated a Union Electric switching station south of the city Sunday morning, causing a two-hour power outage that affected an estimated 42,000 customers in Cape Girardeau, Scott City, Kelso and Chaffee.

Robert Wagner, a spokesman for the electric company, said the waters entered the switching station across from the viaduct substation at about 9 a.m., causing a low voltage control center to short circuit. The substation is southeast of the junction of Interstate 55 and Highway 74.

Union Electric workers had to go to the station to manually switch the circuit breakers, restoring power to the viaduct substation. About 80 percent of Union Electric's customers in Cape Girardeau, all customers in Scott City and Kelso and about half of Chaffee were without power...
