First Salk Shots For Cape Kiddies
Vaccination of Cape County first- and second-grade children with the Salk polio vaccine was placed underway today at St. Vincent's School where 46 children took the shots without a single one crying.
The experience wasn't as bad as many had anticipated, and to help assuage whatever slight pain there might have been, each was given a lollipop.
The vaccinations were given to St. Vincent's children in the forenoon. This afternoon first- and second-graders at May Greene School received the shots.
On Wednesday children of Franklin School will be given the vaccinations from 1 to 3 o'clock...

Robert Kennedy Speaks to Cape Girardeau Audience

Oh, how they loved him.
The youths, that is. They hung on to every word and cheered and waved and had a rousing time.
In fact, they were about the only ones who could see him.
Arriving well before the appointed hour and continuing to swell as Kennedy's plane arrived late, college students packed themselves solid around the Town Plaza stand where Sen. Robert F. Kennedy was to appear.
He had to squeeze his way through the crush, inch by inch, to reach the stand.
Deeply tanned, wearing a gray suit, blue shirt and darker blue tie, the senator was a slight figure as he raised his hand to salute his youthful audience...

Principals named at two city schools

Two new principals were named to head Cape Girardeau elementary schools Monday. Both are women, the first to lead any of the city's public schools since 1957, when Lyda Gibbs became principal at Jefferson.
Barbara Kohlfeld, who has been a facilitator in the schools' gifted program for the past five years, was appointed principal of May Greene School. She replaces Sam Jarrell, who is retiring.
Barbara Blanchard, who has been the interim principal at Washington School during the past year, was named the permanent principal.
The appointments, effective for the 1993-1994 school year, were announced at Monday's Board of Education meeting and were approved unanimously by the board...
