What makes your business unique?
Maryann "Miki" Gudermuth: We are a nonresidential independent living center that offers an array of services to enable a person with a disability to remain active in his or her home and community. This includes: transportation, information/referral, advocacy, peer support, case management, assistive device loan closet, children's services, interpreter referral services for the deaf, in-home, consumer directed services, employment mentoring, nursing home transition and independent living skills training.
What future plans do you have for your business?
MG: In 2013 we are opening our second Cape location which will house our independent living services. United Access of St. Louis, (that makes modifications to vehicles to make them more accessible for people with disabilities) will open their first Southeast Missouri facility in our new transportation building. In-home/consumer directed, autism services and administrative operations remain at the Rusmar location.
What awards or special recognition did you receive in 2012?
MG: Missouri Commission on Human Rights first Disability Awareness Award, Saint Francis Medical Center Disability Support Services Award, Kiwanis Club International's Walter Zoellner Women In Leadership Award.
