__Name:__ Joe Martin
__Age:__ 54
__Place of birth:__ St. Louis
__Spouse, children's names:__ Married to Kate with 3 grown children
__Occupation:__ Code Enforcement Officer
__Employer:__ City of Perryville
__Businesses owned, all or part:__ n/a
__Previous offices held or sought:__ Perry County Sheriff, 2008 (lost)
__What are the primary public safety issues facing Perryville? How should they be addressed?:__
It's impossible to present a plan in 75 words. Public perception plays a key role in how effective any police department can be. I believe the public's perception of Perryville Police Department has become less positive in the last year. The new chief must communicate respectfully with his employees, city leaders and citizens to show the public how effective this department is. I have a 32-year history of communicating respectfully and positively with our community.
__What in your background or education makes you qualified for this office?__
Serving as fully-commissioned officer since 1978, first in the Air Force, then Cape County Sheriff's Department. In 1986, I joined Perryville Police Department, was promoted to sergeant in 1993, then Code Enforcement Officer in 2009. I attend regular POST-certified training, along with specific training for my job as the sole officer responsible for enforcing the city's municipal laws. Each position has given me skills and experiences that I can put to work for you.
__How do you plan to build morale in the department?__
Letting go of the past, after learning from it, is a key to success, so everyone will start with a clean slate and a renewed purpose if I am elected. I respect officers for doing a tough job every day, so I will give them the resources and encouragement they need to succeed. We're here to serve you, and I will continue to serve with respect and compassion. All of these things will build morale.
__What are your long-term goals for the department?__
In less than 75 words: My vision is for satisfied and successful employees, a safe and peaceable community, and for citizens to see that officers must have true servants' hearts to do a dangerous and sometimes thankless job. I will lead by example by respecting officers and community members, by using financial resources to provide the best training/equipment possible, by being easy to contact (my cell: 517-3995), and openly communicating our goals and achievements.
