Fishing, boating and camping attract enthusiasts to scenic Clearwater Lake in Piedmont, Mo.
The lake's original purpose was flood control when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Black River. The project began in 1940, was delayed during the World War II years, and was finished in 1948.
Ever since 1948, fishermen, boaters, swimmers and campers have enjoyed their favorite activities on Clearwater Lake. Recent rumors that the lake would be low this year are just that -- rumors. Randy Davenport of the Corps of Engineers said that the lake will be maintained at its usual summer elevation of 498 feet for everyone's enjoyment.
"The lake will be at normal pool," Davenport said. "Tourism will be business as usual."
Visitors to the lake can rent boats or canoes, or they can bring their own and enter from one of three launch ramps near the campgrounds.
Five campsites are available ranging from sites for those who like to rough it in tents to sites with electric hookups for recreational vehicles with the comforts of home.
Those who like to fish can cast their lines in the hope of catching bass or crappie, Davenport said. Catfish and walleye have been caught below the dam.
Other activities available at Clearwater Lake include picnics, swimming, and hiking. Davenport said construction is scheduled to begin soon on a hiking and biking trail.
Clearwater Lake is bordered by Annapolis, Piedmont and Ellington, all of which feature resorts, motels and restaurants and some shopping, but mostly the lake is there for people who want a quiet, peaceful getaway to enjoy nature.
