Dawes is a 1998 graduate of Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia. He received a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2002. He is pursuing a master of science in nurse anesthesia at Webster University in St. Louis.

A May 28 wedding is planned at New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson.
