Fire caused extensive damage to a home on Highway N in Scott City Saturday evening, firefighters said.
No one was injured in the fire, which apparently started in the utility room of the single-story wood-frame house, said Scott City fire chief Jay Cassout.
He withheld the name of the homeowner because the family who live there is out of town and still didn't know about the fire late Saturday, he said.
Passers-by reported fire when they saw the flames.
The blaze was already raging by the time firefighters were called to the scene, Cassout said. Flames were breaking through the back wall and had reached the roof.
As far as he could tell, the fire began near the hot-water heater, he said.
Volunteers from the New Hamburg-Benton-Commerce fire district aided the Scott City department, lending their pump truck to the cause because there was no emergency water supply available near the home.
