CHAFFEE, Mo. -- A Cape Girardeau teen-ager died in a one-vehicle accident Tuesday morning just north of Chaffee, Mo.
Darlene Haley, 19, was fatally injured in the accident that happened at 3:20 a.m. on Highway 77. Her body was taken to Amick-Burnett Funeral Home in Chaffee.
The accident happened as the vehicle, driven by Danny Reed, 20, of Cape Girardeau, ran off the roadway, hit a utility pole and a power line fell on the vehicle, which set the car on fire. Haley was a passenger in the vehicle, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Reed was seriously injured and taken by helicopter to St. John's hospital in St. Louis. He was the only person in the vehicle not wearing a seat belt.
Two other passengers, Lakeish Johnson, 16, and Candice Long, 15, both of Cape Girardeau, suffered minor injuries and were treated at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
