While growing from a single weekly newspaper three and a half decades ago to 46 newspapers with more than 800,000 readers today, he has always emphasized the importance of quality local news, service to advertisers and a culture of trust and respect with employees, whom he views as part of his own family...

NO BUDGET DANGER IN GIVING MONEY BACK
(Editorial ~ 02/18/01)
For months, a handful of state officials, including some legislators, have cautioned that Missouri's tobacco windfall might be considerably less than anticipated. Of course, the settlement was for a share of the tobacco companies' revenue during that period...

STATE, COUNTIES SHOULD SHARE MEDICAL COSTS
(Editorial ~ 02/18/01)
Another word of caution to Missouri legislators: The state needs to find a way to reimburse counties for state prisoners housed in county jails. GOP BILLS NOW SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY IN MISSOURI SENATE

For Republicans in the Missouri Senate, holding majority status for the first time in 52 years is producing one amazing result: Our bills actually get voted out of committee and placed on the Senate calendar.
