Alto Pass, IL; June 2, 2014 - There will be local peaches in southern Illinois! Despite a long hard winter, Union County, Illinois, peach growers are expecting a nice peach crop this season.
"We feel good about this year," Ren Sirles, President of Rendleman Orchards said. "We are very happy that we will have local peaches available."
The quality of this year's peach crop is a pleasant surprise, given how unusually cold this past winter was. Our area has not seen a winter like this past one in quite some time, with the snow and cold winds carrying well into March.
Currently the peaches are maturing about 10 days to 2 weeks later than in previous years, but with the warmer temperatures, this may change.
According to Vice President, Wayne Sirles, "As spring progressed, it was nice to see we had a full crop of peaches. The peaches are also looking better than expected as we have not had any hail at this point and we have been thinning a bit for good sizing. We feel very fortunate and are anxious for harvest."
Rendleman Orchards Farm Market will be open 7 days a week for the season beginning July 1st, where visitors will be able to purchase locally grown, fresh picked, tree-ripened peaches as well as one of their famous fresh peach smoothies.
