This past weekend marked an emotional end to what has been a long standing tradition in Cape Girardeau. The Kiwanis 50's dance which has been celebrated nearly every year for over 4 decades, echoed its' final note at Arena Park.

This remarkable activity, hosted by the Cape Girardeau Kiwanis Club, encouraged everyone from all age groups to experience, (if for only one night a year) Poodle skirts, t-shirts, greased back hair, school sweaters and jackets, class rings with rubber bands, penny loafers with cuffed jeans and white socks as well as many other outfits that were so popular during this time period.

Countless people have attended this event, yet everyone has a favorite moment of memory. To some it may have been the classic car parades, the costume and dance contests, a favorite song from the live band, or just gathering with some friends and relaxing, while stepping back in time.

17 years ago, the Kiwanis club was granted a special treat. Through the efforts of Fred Horrell, the club was able to proudly announce Bruce, Hey-Baby, Channel as the main headliner for the dance, and remains true today. Many people will remember Bruce from his outstanding performances at the dance, but most of us will remember both he, and his wife Christine for their behind the scenes activities. With warm welcomes and friendly smiles they always encouraged everyone to stop by for a chat.

As the evening came to a close, a lump of sadness could felt in the back of your throat, some people said it reminded them of when they left high school and realized that this maybe the last time they will step foot here, or see some of their friends, classmates and teachers.

Last Saturday marked an end of a piece of history for the Cape Kiwanis club and the city of Cape Girardeau, but just as graduation from high school closes one chapter, it also starts a new one. The Kiwanis Club is working to unveil its next tradition for the annual dance.
