Today, Rolla native and Iraq war veteran Tommy Sowers announced that his campaign raised over $295,000 in the first quarter of 2010, his strongest fundraising quarter to date. 99% of those funds were from individual contributions and the campaign now boasts more than 2,000 individual supporters.
"I'm overwhelmed by the strength and size of our army," said Sowers. "We made a decision early on to run this campaign differently and not spend all our time fundraising. Instead, I got in my truck and met voters. I'm proud that our campaign continues to be funded by individuals. They give us the fuel and ammo to fight this fight, and we'll stay on offense through November."
Tommy Sowers began the quarter after announcing over 1,000 new contributors in Q4 of 2009. Finishing March with over $679,000 raised since September, he has already raised more from individuals than incumbent Jo Ann Emerson has in any of her seven previous two-year cycles.
Said Sowers Campaign Manager Jonathan Feifs, "The response has been extraordinary. We couldn't be happier with this result or the trajectory of the campaign. The amount of individual support reinforces what Tommy heard during Boots on the Ground, his 28-day campaign around the district: people know that we need new blood in Congress. With this type of support, we will continue building a formidable organization for the rest of the cycle."
Sowers, an 11-year Army Special Forces veteran, is running for Congress against incumbent Jo Ann Emerson, a former insurance lobbyist from Washington, DC. Tommy Sowers is the Democratic candidate for Missouri's 8th Congressional district and does not face opposition in the primary. Emerson will face a Republican primary challenger, cattle rancher Bob Parker, in August.
