A significant part of the advocate's job is to go to court with victims of abuse. Horrell felt her background would be a plus in a job that might involve cases where children might be at risk. Children are often involved in domestic violence cases either as the object of abuse or a witness.

Horrell has a bachelor's degree in social work from Southeast Missouri State University and her master's from the University of Missouri.
