CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Pvt. Augustine Rivera, of Cape Girardeau, recently completed his military training to become a utility equipment repairman for Missouri National Guard's Headquarters Company, 935th Aviation Support Battalion in Springfield.
"I joined the Guard because I wanted to serve my country and go to college. The Guard let's me do both, I knew it's what I wanted to do," Rivera said.
He graduated from basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Lee, N.J., Sept. 4, 2010.
Prior to training, Rivera served with Company E of the Recruit Sustainment program in Cape Girardeau. Through the program, he learned basic Army skills and values and became more familiar with his role as a Soldier in the Missouri Army National Guard.
Staff Sgt. Doyle Wicker, recruiter at the Dexter armory, said Rivera will be a great Soldier for his new unit.
"He's a very bright and driven young man," said Wicker. "He's dedicated to school and training. His goal-oriented attitude will be a positive asset for the 935th."
Rivera will begin serving with his new unit in February 2011.
Rivera is the son of Tammy Rivera, of Wardell. He is a graduate of North Pemiscot Senior High School and is currently attending Southeast Missouri State University.
