Little Town with Big Hearts

Tuesday, January 12, 2010, a 7.0 earthquake shook the people of Haiti. The heartbreaking catastrophe destroyed nearly every home and left many hearts broken.

An English class from East Prairie Junior High has came up with a plan that just might begin to heal those broken hearts. Students were touched by newspaper articles and photos of the catastrophe, motivating them to help. Even though there was a world away difference, nothing stopped students from writing letters, making songs and learning as much as possible about the disaster.

Obsolete items such as textbooks, school supplies, and old t-shirts were gathered and boxed up. A total of 24 boxes were collected and sent to Southeast State University where students unloaded the boxes. Due to the expensive shipping costs, Reverend Patrick Ike Nwokoye from SEMO took care of the shipment's arrival to Haiti. The shipment is estimated to arrive in Haiti in about a month. Students will then look forward to pictures of the Haiti children benefiting from the obsolete items left lying around.
